I wrote the lyrics to this song during my junior year in high school. As you might know, people say that junior year is the hardest. I distinctly remember sitting in my AP Calculus BC class thinking how overwhelmed I was with all the stuff I had to do. I felt the pressures of school, SATs, thoughts about college, and thoughts about my future pressing down on me. I felt like I was at the point where I would fall of the edge or break under the stress. That’s where the title comes from.
To hope for a breath of fresh air
Is but a dream of dreams unsaid.
Can’t even stop and pray,
Unscramble the gray in my head.
Is this not the way we’re meant to be? I think we’re bent the other way.
Trapped in a room with no one to care, the walls as cold as the eyes that stare
The nights melt into days. How can we drown in chains?
Is there a lifeguard on duty?
Must we fall apart to save our lives?
When will we be free?To hope for release is out of the question
Don’t think of any other place that I could be.
Where is the sky when you need it? Too high to reach.
How do their eyes perceive us? Too bad, we’re never there.
Where is there? How can we drown in chains
When there’s a lifeguard on duty?
Must we fall apart to save our lives?
When will we be free? This candle burns bright, enough to save the night.
Its fire mends a hole in my soul.
Why must we waste the year when there’s so few before us?
We’re at the point of breaking. This heart lies beyond this shore.
This path leads to so much more.
So why take the pins and needles?
We must be good enough to make them happy. When all are standing up
Perhaps to stand out you need to take a seat.
So why wage the war of wills?
Can’t we all sit down and stand together? What is the point of breaking?
